|This weekend it's Small Business Saturday...it's the day when small businesses up and down the country get to make some noise in recognition of their massive contribution to this country. It's not just about the economics (which is huge employing 60% of the private sector plus we pay our taxes) but we're the guys who add colour to the High Street and provide you the consumer with choice in an increasingly bland landscape.
Take our own sector for example. This week JD Sports announced their takeover of GO Outdoors adding them to their long list of acquisitions - George Fisher, Tiso, Ultimate Outdoors and of course Blacks. With the other big outdoor player AS Adventure owning Cotswolds, Snow & Rock, Cycle Surgery & Runners Need, small independent outdoor retailers are getting thin on the ground. That's not just bad for trade it's bad for brands - take Moon a small company in Sheffield for example that sells products manufactured in the UK. With less independents around there's less opportunities for small brands such as Moon who can't meet the massive discounts demanded by the bigger players.
For home grown brands to develop in the UK we need a thriving independent sector and a move away from a market dominated by big business. I'm sure this must apply to other sectors, it makes sense that small businesses are good for everybody...
That's why this weekend we're asking you to think small and go out and strut yourself on the High Street!
